Of the carts we have listed here, osCommerce was the original base code source for three. CRELoaded, osCMax, and ZenCart all started from the open source osCommerce base code and were subsequently modified and changed. So CRE Loaded, osCMax, and Zen Cart are forks in the osCommerce development and offer additional and added features not included in the base osCommerce distribution.

Since all these carts are built around the same base code we can confidently work on any of these carts.

As you may have noticed we lean towards advising our clients to get CRELoaded or ZenCart as our favorite osCommerce development forks. Why? Well probably because they are the carts we have had the most experience with, although we have extensive experience with all the open source software listed on our site. But also because we think CRE Loaded and Zen Cart have the strongest team and community behind them and we feel that these offer the most room for additional improvements and we know that ZenCart and CRELoaded are going to continue to grow and support their carts and will continue to evolve their code base, keeping it up to date with all the latest internet trends and needs. Also, if you purchase the Pro or B2B versions of CRELoaded (if you believe in paying for Open Source Software) you will get "professional" support from the CRELoaded team.

That said please look for yourself and find a cart that you think best suits your needs. We see promising strides being taken by the ZenCart team and would recommend taking a look at Zen and or CRELoaded as our personal choice of carts but again this is a very personal and arbitrary belief, and everyone should indeed do their own research and find the solution they think best.

Magento and CubeCart are two other popular shopping cart options that have large (hundreds of thousands) communities around them and they are both PHP MYSQL driven ecommmerce shopping cart systems with their own unique code base, forums, wikis, downloads etc.
